CHARACTER
Character Name:
Madoka Kaname
Fandom: Madoka @ that one wiki
Timeline: The night after she
shoots Mami Tomoe.
Crimes: Murder, assisted suicide, vigilantism, trespassing on private property, truancy, breaking curfew, gluttony

Personality: Madoka Kaname is a kindhearted young girl with a lot of growing left to do.

This is a bit of a gross oversimplification, of course, completely aside from any double-meaning, but it serves well enough for a quick introduction to the character. She's a young girl in middle school, the time of her life when she should be hanging out with friends and figuring out how to alternate between spending allowance on friends and saving it for later. Her mother explicitly mentions that Madoka's always been a good child, never a liar or lazy. Reading some of Madoka's writing and thoughts the worst you could get an impression for is a distinct tendency towards the gluttonous. But even through all this, she undeniably has the potential to be immeasurably strong, even if she doesn't realize it.

Because that's exactly it – Madoka doesn't believe that part of herself exists yet. She's a young girl who's never received a love letter, only ever been asked out once, and who has friends who seem to exceed her in every way she looks. (They don't, of course. If Madoka were to take a neutral, non-emotional look, she'd be able to see that she's just like anyone else in most respects. If only emotions worked that way, hmm?) The way Madoka sees it, she leads a mostly pointless existence; it would be best if she could find some purpose, some way to help others around her and finally become a person in her own right.

So when Kyubey comes along, offering a miracle and a great power at the cost of defending others, Madoka seizes the opportunity. Almost immediately, we see a much different girl than we were introduced to in the beginning: it's only been a week, and she's already more comfortable in her own skin. She's more willing to initiate physical contact, less hesitant, and feels that she actually has a purpose in what she's doing – saving lives where others can't.

Of course, nothing is as it seems in this world, and it only takes a week and change for a young girl with long, braided black hair to show up and change everything. Homura Akemi, a new transfer student, happens to be a magical girl seemingly capable of stopping time and creating explosions, and within the first few days she tells the whole group something beyond the realm of imagination: witches are just magical girls that have failed their mission.

Of course, nobody likes a Cassandra, and so she is ignored until Sayaka's inevitable fall and demise. Madoka is heartbroken by this, of course – her closest friend has just died, and all because they were idiots that didn't listen. Things only get worse as the witch's barrier fades, though: Mami Tomoe shoots Kyouko's soul gem, killing her instantly, and magically binds Homura in preparation to kill her too. (If they turn into these monsters, after all, it is the only responsible outcome.) Madoka, confronted with a horrible situation, makes a split-second decision that proves her to not be the useless, whining or passive person she believes herself to be – she shoots Mami Tomoe, her friend and mentor, before she can kill anyone else. This single act both demonstrates and forces the harshest change to Madoka's personality: even if her idealism and her drive to protect others remains, her innocence dies out.

So, what does this mean for a Madoka removed from her universe? It means that where she once would have taken others' help or suggestions on faith alone, there will always be a nagging feeling that there will be a catch. It's what allows her to ask Homura to kill her and go back to the past – after all, it's better than becoming a witch and hurting others, and it allows them all another chance. But even with the worldview terrible conditions have forced upon her, she still manages to keep some hope for the future.

After all, that's what it means to be a magical girl.

Abilities: Puella Lich Madoka Magica: By becoming a magical girl, Madoka is more or less a glorified lich with a phylactery that turns into a ring. She can take absurd amounts of damage, even (as Kyubey hints) the destruction of her physical body, and as long as her Soul Gem remains unshattered she can reform herself. Kyubey mentions that magical girls can stop feeling pain if they work at it, but this seems like a poor choice due to pain being a necessary component of human reaction times.

Phenomenal cosmic powers: Madoka's wish allows her two things: a magical bow of light with which she may fight the darkness, and the ability to use magic in general. It's never completely specified just what magic she can cast – in one Drama CD, she uses an enhancement magic on the willowy Homura's legs to allow her to pass the trials of gym class, so it seems like a fairly wide range. The necessity to outline her powers for RP's sake is somewhat dulled by the nature of said magic: using it takes a toll on her soul gem's brightness. If her soul gem is consumed by impurities and imperfections (usually by overuse of magic in a time of despair), it cracks into a Grief Seed and creates a witch where her soul once was. This is understandably a bad thing, and so wasteful magic is avoided.

Funky transformation sequence: she totally gets one when she goes into magical girl mode. Also, her clothing is ridiculous.

I'm not entirely certain what restrictions/rules Homura's player is under for playing a magical girl; whatever they are, I'd be entirely willing to go the same route if it's most convenient.

Suitability: Having just murdered a close friend in self-defense, I feel Madoka would be willing to accept her imprisonment without too much kerfuffle. However, there is a single element tying her to her timeline: the Walpurgis Night's inevitable arrival. Madoka will likely try to talk with Homura about this – after all, if she and Homura don't destroy it, who will? From here (since I doubt Homura will be particularly thrilled to help Madoka find a way to go die against Walpurgis), it seems fairly likely she will give up and accept her incarceration – and start looking for ways to help the others around her. After all, every last one of them are people, even if they've done things they regret.

Action post sample: [ staring at her communicator isn't going to get this done any quicker. she knows that all too well – when something has to be done, action must be taken. sitting around won't do a thing. and even if it's something you'd rather not do, not in a hundred years, well- sometimes doing the right thing takes priority over that.

so she picks up the device, navigating quickly to homura's network ID before entering the message prompt. a few tries later, her message is finally sent.

we need to talk about Walpurgis.

waiting for her is torture, plain and simple. generally speaking, sitting alone with her thoughts at this point is a bad idea. it's easy enough at first to avoid those same pitfalls, smiling with friends or trying to listen to others, but it only takes a single thought of mami to shatter whatever composure she's built up. nobody ever told her it would stay this difficult, she thinks for a moment, and even though she knows that's not true it helps a little.

is this what it's like for everyone here? distractions and smiles with huge hits of regret? she's not sure that's the case, but it's a sadly comforting thought. a sound from the doorway alerts her, and after the initial jump she smiles at the newcomer.
]

You're here, Homura.

[ assisted suicide” flies through her mind. she tries to just keep smiling.

they've all done what they had to.
]

Network post sample: [ she's not sure where to begin, really. there's no sense in asking why she's in prison when she was told only minutes prior, and there's no point in trying to make a great first impression when you're stuck in a bulky orange jumpsuit. still, it only takes a moment's thought to decide that the “video” option she's presented with is the best one.

when the camera clicks on, a middle-schooler with light pink hair and eyes is smiling quietly.
]

I don't really know what you're supposed to do here. This is, um... my first time in a prison.

[ and she laughs at that, a sad little laugh full of embarassment and self-deflection. when she's finished, she gives that same subdued smile again. ]

For anyone who's listening, my name is Madoka Kaname. It's nice to meet all of you – I hope we can all be friends.

[ she gives a short bow, not curt so much as rushed, before looking back to the camera with an odd sort of resolution. ]

Homura, if you can hear me, I- tell me where you are, and I'll come and find you.

[ and with that, she reaches forward, keeping her gaze locked just long enough to turn off the camera. ]
